Middle East conflict prompts changes

F1's new era featuring a totally different car and power unit kicked off with the Australian Grand Prix as the season-opener before heading to China a week later.

Following a standalone race in Japan, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia were due to stage a double-header in April, but these events were cancelled as a result of the US-Israeli war with Iran.

F1 hoped to reinstate Bahrain into the 4 October slot but escalating tensions in the Middle East meant the plan had to be shelved.

Instead, Malaysia will make a shock return to the F1 calendar and host a Grand Prix for the first time since 2017. This will officially be known as the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Other changes for 2026 saw Imola drop off and a new race in Madrid be added to the schedule.

There remains some uncertainty whether the Qatar and Abu Dhabi races will be able to go ahead as planned.

Imola has been mooted as a potential stand-in to stage the F1 season finale if the Middle Eastern races cannot take place.

As things stand, the F1 2026 calendar stands at 23 races.

Canada was moved to an earlier slot in late May to help make freight travel more efficient and create a consolidated European leg of the calendar.

The European stretch of the 2026 F1 season began in Monaco on June 7 and ends in Spain at the new 'Madring' on September 13.

The F1 2026 season now features four triple-headers, three of which will take place at the end of the season, with each separated by a week's break in-between.
