The 22 Formula 1 drivers delivered a remarkably clean opening practice session for the Spanish Grand Prix at F1's newest track.
Despite all the concerns about the 22-corner Madring, situated around the IFEMA district of the Spanish capital Madrid, and its potential propensity for sparking collisions and chaos, the initial 60-minute session was incident-free.
And it was Mercedes duo George Russell and Kimi Antonelli who led the way, with the British driver setting the fastest lap with a time of 1:34.077s, finishing almost three-tenths of a second clear of his team-mate, who holds a 66-point championship lead.
The Ferrari pair of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, the latter on medium tyres compared to the leading trio on softs, were third and fourth quickest, followed by Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who was also on softs.
