F3 driver issues major medical update after horror team-mate collision

The first F3 Sprint race of the year saw a terrifying collision between two Prema drivers.

Prema Formula 3 driver Louis Sharp has issued an update on social media following a horrible collision with his team-mate last weekend in Melbourne.

During the opening Sprint race of the F3 season at Albert Park, Sharp and team-mate James Wharton made contact on the entry to Turn 5, resulting in both drivers suffering a heavy impact with the barrier on the outside of the corner.

Both cars sustained major damage and were withdrawn from the remainder of the event, with Sharp confirming that he has sustained a "few back injuries."

Sharp posted a series of images and videos of himself in hospital wearing a neck brace, where he has begun his recovery.

On Instagram, Sharp's post read: "Definitely not the start to the year we wanted! A crash in the sprint race while coming through the pack unfortunately resulted in a night in hospital and a few back injuries sustained.

"Heading back to NZ now to have the proper time to rest and heal. Wanted to say a massive thank you for the support from the @prema_team and the amazing doctors and nurses at Alfred hospital for looking after me.

"Focus now is on recovery so I can be back in the car very soon!"
