Fernando Alonso drops major hint over F1 future

Fernando Alonso is out of contract at the end of the season, leading to suggestions this year could be his last in F1.

Two-time F1 champion Fernando Alonso has hinted that the 2026 F1 season will not be his final campaign racing on the grid.

Alonso has long refused to commit to his F1 future beyond this year, having targeted the regulation change as a chance to compete at the front of the grid once more.

However, a disastrous start to the year for the Aston Martin-Honda project has seen it languish at the back of the field.

The struggles have led to suggestions that Alonso's exit from the sport could be hastened by Aston Martin's form.

But speaking at Monaco historic grand prix, Alonso insisted he is feeling no urge to walk away.

"I love what I do,” Alonso said. “I love racing. I did my first race when I was three years [old], and I am 44, so 41 years of my life I have been behind a steering wheel.

“So the moment I have to stop racing, it will be a very hard decision and difficult to accept.

"The time will tell. I will feel it. At the moment, I don't feel it is that time yet.

“I feel competitive, I feel motivated, I feel happy when I drive. So, yeah, hopefully not the last season."

Away from the track, Alonso recently had a major development in his personal life after his partner Melissa gave birth to their first child.
