Kush Maini topped F2 qualifying at the Miami Grand Prix, beating Rafael Camara by 33 milliseconds under the Floridian sun.
On F1's main support series' first visit to the United States, Martinius Stenshorne rounded out the top three after the 30-minute grid-setting session.
Alex Dunne was fourth-quickest at the Miami International Autodrome, whilst Gabriele Mini and Nicolas Varrone were fifth and sixth.
Laurens Van Hoepen and Nikola Tsolov qualified ninth and tenth, respectively, and will therefore start from the front row for the reverse-grid shorter sprint race.
Nine-time IndyCar winner Colton Herta, who went fastest in practice at his homecoming, qualified P14 after a mistake on his final run.
Dunne, despite qualifying fourth, will line up ninth for the feature race on Sunday, as he has a five-place grid drop to serve from the opening round in Melbourne.
Stenshorne suffered an engine failure with little more than a minute of the session to run, ending it prematurely due to yellow flags.
