FIA issues statement after saddening death of motorsport legend Alex Zanardi

Alex Zanardi's family announced in a statement on social media that the motorsport legend had died at the age of 59. The FIA has reacted to the saddening news.

The FIA has issued a statement following the saddening death of motorsport legend Alex Zanardi, at the age of 59.

Zanardi's family announced the horrible news via a statement on social media, with the world having lost a true great.

In addition to being a two-time CART champion (now known as IndyCar) and a former F1 driver, Zanardi went on to become a four-time Paralympic gold medallist.

He was known not only for his outstanding performance, but especially for the perseverance and resilience he showed after all his setbacks.

With racing titles and Paralympic gold medals, he was admired by many for being more than a sportsman, he was an inspiration.

The FIA echoed that message in its statement.

The FIA's statement read: "The FIA is deeply saddened by the passing of Alex Zanardi, the former Formula One driver and two-time CART champion.

"His path from a life-changing accident to a gold medal at the Paralympic Games made him one of the most admired athletes and an enduring symbol of courage and determination."
