Mercedes' stern instruction to its title-fighting F1 drivers revealed

Mercedes has been running at the front of the field across the opening four rounds of the 2026 F1 season.

Kimi Antonelli has revealed Mercedes’ instructions to its drivers as they battle for the F1 title this year.

The Brackley-based squad has emerged as the fastest team at the start of the season, winning all four grands prix held so far.

Three of those victories have gone to Antonelli, who now holds a 20-point lead over team-mate George Russell in the drivers’ championship.

As the duo chase their first title, Mercedes is allowing them to race freely, while keeping the team’s interests as the top priority.

“The team has been very clear with us since the first race in Australia,” Antonelli told media including RacingNews365

“They said, 'You can race each other, but obviously with respect, not trying to do any stupid things between each other'.”

Mercedes is no stranger to title-contending team-mates, having managed a tense fight between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg from 2014 to 2016.

That partnership saw various flashpoints of intensity, a situation Mercedes is keen to avoid this time around.

“At the end of the day, we race each other, we want to win, we want to be the best, but at the same time we want the best for the team as well,” Antonelli added.

“So obviously me and George are very well aware that we can race each other, but with respect and without trying to do any stupid things.

“The team has given us the green light because they want to give both of us the same amount of opportunities.

“So, they said, 'Just race, but you can race each other, but just be clean'.”
