The Team Verstappen entry at the Nurburgring 24 Hours ended qualifying 1 at the Nordschleife in third place.
The first on-track session of the weekend was held in mixed conditions as the rain hit the track late on.
The #3 challenger was in the top spot early in the session before Max Verstappen handed the car over to his team-mates.
With 30 minutes to go, the #80 Mercedes soared to the top of the times with an 8:14 from Fabio Schuller, while the #1 BMW also managed to pip Verstappen's entry.
On-track action will resume later with qualifying 2.
