Fernando Alonso has outlined his thought process as he weighs up his future beyond the current season.
Alonso is out of contract at the end of the 2026 campaign and is enduring a challenging start to the year with Aston Martin-Honda.
The car has been uncompetitive and unreliable across the opening rounds, leading to suggestions that Alonso could opt to step away from the sport at the end of the season.
Alonso has previously explored other forms of motorsport, particularly during his hiatus in 2019 and 2020.
When asked if his decision will be made easier knowing what is on offer beyoond F1, Alonso told media including RacingNews365: “It helps, I know what is outside F1.
“The type of racing you have is probably arguably better racing [than] F1.
“That’s why some drivers now, they are finding more fun outside F1. I found that 10 years ago when I moved to Indy, in 2017, I did one race and this kind of thing.
“I know what I can expect outside.”
However, Alonso conceded that nothing else in motorsport compares to the atmosphere that F1 creates for the driver.
“But there are moments in your life and in your career that you need F1, because a part of the driving and the adrenaline of F1, you have the whole package,” he said.
“You have, the tension, you have the sponsors, you have different, different factors that put the balance more into F1.
“Now in this moment in my life, I can choose, what makes me more happy.”
