F1 rookie hits mechanic in scary pit lane incident

Haas rookie Ryo Hirakawa hit one of his mechanics in the pit lane during the first free practice session at the Austrian Grand Prix.

Ryo Hirakawa hit the front left mechanic during FP1 at the Austrian Grand Prix as the rookie driver brought Esteban Ocon's Haas back into the pits.

The Japanese driver reportedly went long, missing his pit box and making contact with a member of the American squad's crew. No broadcast footage has been shown.

Thankfully, the mechanic appeared unharmed by the incident, having promptly jumped back to their feet.

Haas has confirmed that they are fine after "very slight contact."

Hirakawa is one of six rookies taking part in the opening hour of running at the Red Bull Ring, alongside Jak Crawford at Aston Martin, Luke Browning at Williams, Dino Beganovic at Ferrari, Paul Aron at Audi and Ayumu Iwasa at Racing Bulls.
