Fernando Alonso and Max Verstappen have both spoken in the past about being keen to strike up a partnership at Le Mans.

Fernando Alonso has insisted it would not be realistic to strike up a partnership with Max Verstappen for the 2027 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The topic of the two F1 champions teaming up in the same entry has been raised many times in the past, and with next year's Le Mans not clashing with a grand prix weekend, it opened the door to the possibility.

Alonso is a two-time winner of the event, having won in 2018 and 2019 with Toyota.

Verstappen is also an avid follower of endurance racing and has voiced his desire to compete at Le Mans in the future.

When asked what needs to happen for the partnership to become reality, Alonso told media including RacingNews365: “That Max is more free on the calendar.

“He does a lot of races.”

While Alonso is not expecting the two to link up next year, he kept the door open for another opportunity.

“I don't think next year will happen, but maybe in the future. That would be nice.”

Alonso 'will be around' regardless of F1 call

Alonso has not yet detailed whether he will remain on the F1 grid next year, as he endures a challenging campaign with Aston Martin.

However, the Spaniard has reiterated on many occasions that it is the enjoyment of the regulations, rather than the performance of the car, that will determine his decision.

But should he opt to walk away from F1, Alonso insisted it will be far from the end of his racing career.

“I will be around, as I said many times, I will keep driving,” he said.

“If it's in F1 or other categories, I don't really know. While I'm in F1, I will be with this team, driving or not driving.

“I love the sport. F1 is my life, motorsport is my life, and it will always be.”
