Fernando Alonso has announced he will make a decision on his F1 future after the summer break, but is preparing for the possibility that he is racing at each track on the calendar for the last time.
The two-time F1 drivers' champion is racing at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for the 23rd time this weekend, by his estimates, but is not sure whether he will be back.
With the former host of the Spanish Grand Prix set to alternate with the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, taking even-numbered years, the F1 will not return to the venue until 2028, when Alonso will be approaching his 47th birthday.
Speaking in the drivers' FIA press conference ahead of this weekend's Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix — with the new round in Madrid now designed as the official Spanish Grand Prix — Alonso said, in passing, that it is "probably my last Barcelona race in Formula 1" when asked if he had a message for his adorning home fans.
When pressed on the throwaway remark, the Spanish driver explained that he will review his place in F1 later in the year, with his current Aston Martin contract up at the end of the season.
The 32-time grand prix winner has also loosely been linked with a return to Alpine, which would be his fourth time racing for Team Enstone.
However, whether he wants to continue racing is the first and most pressing decision he must make.
"I don't have anything, anything in mind," he told media, including RacingNews365. "After summer, I will make the decision to continue or not.
"But Barcelona is obviously not happening next year, so if I don't know what I will do next year, it's nearly impossible to be sure of what I will be doing in two years' time.
"I would say, I consider every race that I go to this year, that it potentially could be my last time in Australia, my last time in China, my last time in Monaco, and here in Barcelona, there is a little bit more of that chance, as it's not happening next year."
