Fernando Alonso teases Formula E interest as F1 future remains unclear

Fernando Alonso is yet to decide what he will do next year with his Aston Martin contract set to expire at the end of 2026.

Fernando Alonso has teased that Formula E could be of interest to him, with his future in Formula 1 remaining unclear.

The two-time world champion is out of contract at the conclusion of 2026 and is set to decide whether he will continue in F1 around the summer break.

Alonso could decide to continue with Aston Martin for a fifth campaign or look for a move elsewhere, with rumours of a return to Alpine to end his F1 career continuing to circulate.

However, the Spaniard knows that he will not be in F1 forever and is already keeping a close eye on other categories that could be of interest.

A return to the World Endurance Championship (WEC) is something Alonso has kept firmly on his radar, a move that would be easily possible through Aston Martin's hypercar programme.

He recently tested Aston Martin's Valkyrie, a race version of which is used in the WEC. A second Dakar appearance is also something Alonso is open to, while Formula E's new Gen4 car has caught his eye.

Formula E will move into its new Gen4 era next season, with the car capable of 0-100 km/h in 1.8 seconds, featuring a top speed of 335 km/h and permanent all-wheel drive. Alonso has been keeping an eye on its performance in private testing.

Asked which cars would be fun to drive and race next, Alonso told select media, including RacingNews365: "I don't know. Difficult to say. All of the cars are fun, you know.

"I drove the Valkyrie a month ago at Paul Ricard, and it was a fun car to drive and surprisingly fast at high speed, with a lot of downforce. They have Michelin tyres, which is obviously a plus, and you can drive flat out with no limitations: no overheating, no degradation, no tyre pressures going through the roof, all those kinds of things. So, it's a fast and fun car to drive.

"Dakar and rally cars in general are very fun because you're just dancing with the car. Any car, even Formula E. I think the new car next year, with four-wheel drive, seems quite fast from the tests they did.

"So, all cars are fast and fun, but Formula One is very unique and still the pinnacle of motorsport."
