Franco Colapinto hit with costly penalty after Barcelona GP

Franco Colapinto has been punished by the stewards at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

Franco Colapinto has been awarded a 10-second time penalty at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix for a yellow flag infringement.

The Alpine driver was deemed not to have sufficiently slowed when Fernando Alonso pulled off track to retire his Aston Martin between Turns 8 and 9 on Lap 38 of 66.

Whilst the Argentine did ease off the throttle, it was not enough to satisfy the race director and the stewards.

The official decision document confirmed: "The Stewards determine that, albeit the driver of Car 43 slightly reduced speed before entering the single yellow flag zone, but did not discernibly reduce speed in the relevant yellow flag sector.

"The Stewards acknowledge that the driver reacted to the yellow flag, but do not consider the reaction to be sufficient to comply with the regulations. Therefore, a penalty on the lower end of the applicable scale of penalties is imposed."

Having crossed the line in eighth, just behind team-mate Pierre Gasly, Colapinto has been demoted to P10, behind the Racing Bulls duo of Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad.

The 23-year-old has also been handed a penalty point on his FIA Super Licence, taking him to two for the rolling 12-month period.
