Alpine Formula 1 driver Franco Colapinto has spoken for the first time about a theft he suffered in Milan during the summer break, jokingly declaring it "the worst day of my life" after the thieves made off with his clothes and passport.
The 23-year-old Argentine initially shared the news of the theft via an Instagram post on 6 August. But he has now revealed further details about the ordeal.
During an interview with ESPN, Colapinto explained that his personal car was broken into while he was dining out in Milan.
"They stole everything from me," he said. "I wish they had only stolen the mate [Argentinian drink]. Everything. My wallet, passport. All my clothes. A complete disaster. I was left with nothing. In Milan.
"I left everything in the car. I went to eat at an Italian restaurant that I really like. The best carbonara. And then, when I came back, there was nothing left inside. Nothing."

After reporting the incident to the local authorities, Colapinto returned to his base in Monaco. Remarkably, the situation was partially resolved shortly after his arrival.
"We filed a police report," he added. "We went back to Monaco. I get to Monaco and I got a call. +39 showing up on the phone, an Italian number. They tell me [the police], 'We found your wallet with your documents.' I went back to Milan. We picked everything up. I drove 1,200 kilometres in one day. I’ve never spent so much money on gas in my life.
"I don’t know what they did with the mate and the thermos. Messi’s thermos. The mate tasted amazing. I loved that mate. It was the worst day of my life. A total tragedy!" he laughed.
Colapinto currently sits 12th in the drivers' championship with 19 points.
