Former F1 driver Jolyon Palmer has stated it is critical for George Russell to win the Italian Grand Prix for his title hopes this year.
Russell currently sits 59 points behind team-mate Kimi Antonelli in the drivers' championship, with the Italian enjoying the lion's share of Mercedes' success so far in 2026.
However, Antonelli has already confirmed that he will take a grid penalty this weekend at Monza, despite it being his home race.
The 19-year-old will be fitted with a brand new power unit for the event as Mercedes, offering Russell a chance to gain points, should he finish ahead.
With the second half of the campaign now in full swing, Palmer highlighted the importance of the event for Russell.
“Reliability is not going to be easy at Monza,” Palmer told the F1 Nation podcast.
“If Kimi wins in Monza with a grid penalty, he is champion - I'll go as far as saying that.
“It'll be such a crushing blow. He will have won his home race with a load of overtaking, huge aplomb and it will suck the life out of George to not take points out of him in Monza.
“George has to win this.”
Despite losing further ground to Antonelli last time out at Zandvoort, Palmer insisted Russell can take encouragement from his own performance.
“He knows Kimi has a grid drop. He knows that he's got a golden shot to back up what was a solid weekend in Zandvoort,” he said.
“He outqualified Kimi, he took sprint pole, won the sprint. If he didn't get such bad starts in the race, possibly he could actually have beaten Kimi in the race.
“I don't think the pace difference was enough for Kimi just to blast past him.
“So I think George will be thinking, 'Again, it's now or never'.”
