Haas sign McLaren driver for F1 test

A major opportunity for this young hopeful, who is seeking to find a seat on the F1 grid for the 2027 season.

Reigning Formula 2 champion and McLaren F1 reserve driver Leonardo Fornaroli has been handed a test outing with Haas later this week.

Fornaroli will get behind the wheel of the Haas VF-25 at the Circuito de Jerez as part of a two-day test taking place on Wednesday and Thursday.

The running is being conducted under the TPC (Testing of Previous Cars) program, which allows teams to provide track time to drivers using older machinery.

Fornaroli joined the McLaren F1 programme late last year after securing the F2 title and is serving as the team’s test and reserve driver this season.

The Italian made his Formula 1 weekend debut last weekend with the Woking-based squad, replacing Lando Norris for the opening practice session.

Now, Fornaroli will have the opportunity to gain experience with another team as he continues his push to secure a place on the F1 grid for 2027.

A statement from Haas reads: “TGR Haas F1 Team has the capacity to test and appraise drivers through its TPC (Testing of Previous Cars) program.

“Leonardo Fornaroli, the 2025 FIA Formula 2 Champion, has subsequently been offered the opportunity to drive its VF-25 at the Circuito de Jerez – Ángel Nieto, Spain, 17-18 June, with TGR Haas F1 Team reserve driver Ryō Hirakawa also in attendance at the test.”
