Jaguar responds to troubling Formula E Tokyo record as title fight nears climax

Jaguar team principal Ian James has addressed the outfit's consistent struggles in Tokyo over the past two seasons ahead of this weekend's Formula E double-header in the Japanese capital.

Formula E returns to Tokyo Big Sight, but this time under the lights across Saturday and Sunday, with just four races remaining this season.

Jaguar enters Tokyo on the back of a frustrating event in Shanghai, which saw Mitch Evans lose the lead of the drivers' championship to Pascal Wehrlein after picking up just four points, while Porsche is now just six points adrift in the teams' standings.

Antonio Felix da Costa did at least bring some joy to what was a mostly wet event in Shanghai, scoring a podium in the first of the two races at the Shanghai International Circuit.

Nevertheless, the Kidlington-based outfit's momentum has been firmly disrupted, with Jaguar's previous results in Tokyo also leaving plenty to be desired.

Across the three completed races in Tokyo over the past two years, just 12 points have been scored by the Big Cat, all courtesy of now-Citroën driver Nick Cassidy. Evans has never finished a race in Tokyo.

On paper, it bodes badly for Jaguar and Evans' hopes of bouncing back. However, significant progress was made after the Tokyo E-Prix in 2025. 

Following that event, five of the final seven rounds were won by either Cassidy or Evans, giving James confidence that the team clearly discovered something during its difficult period, providing reason to be optimistic about returning to Tokyo this time around.

Asked if Jaguar's previous results in Tokyo concern him, James told RacingNews365 during an interview: "I'm not overly concerned about it, really, because I think Jaguar turned a corner last year after Tokyo.

"I think there was a greater understanding of the Gen3 Evo package that we had, which unlocked the sort of performance and consistency we saw in the second half of last season.

"So, as long as that plays a role in making sure we can be strong in Tokyo, then we'll be okay. We'll keep that focus in mind and make sure we continue improving when we get out there."
