Lando Norris hints at Triple Crown desire after 'part one done'

Lando Norris has suggested he would be open to pursuing motorsport’s coveted Triple Crown after already completing one of its three components.

The Triple Crown has been achieved only once, by Graham Hill, who won the Indianapolis 500, the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Monaco Grand Prix during his career.

There remains some debate over whether the Formula 1 element should be defined as victory at the Monaco Grand Prix or winning the F1 world championship.

Having already won both the Monaco Grand Prix and the drivers’ title, Norris has effectively completed the Formula 1 portion of the challenge, leaving success outside the category as the remaining hurdle in his pursuit of the historic achievement.

The reigning world champion travelled to Indianapolis earlier this week, where he was asked whether he could envision himself competing in the Indianapolis 500 in the future.

“You never know,” Norris replied, speaking to local reporters. “I don't want to say 'no'. I certainly want to try things outside of F1.

“I'm a racing fan, I love F1 more than anything. But at the same time, I love everything. I love bikes, I love rally, I love IndyCar. All racing in general.

“Whether it's just IndyCar or the Indy 500, I know the Indy 500 is 'the one'. It's part of the triple crown for McLaren as well.

“I won Monaco, that's part one done. I've got a championship under my belt.”

While no current F1 driver has won the Indianapolis 500, the event has previously been contested by Fernando Alonso, who also claimed victory at Le Mans. Audi driver Nico Hulkenberg is another active F1 competitor to have won the famous endurance race.

Norris admitted that seeing fellow F1 drivers enjoy success in other categories of motorsport has made the prospect of following a similar path increasingly appealing.

“There are two more to do,” he said. 

“I've never had a thought of wanting to achieve the Triple Crown, but I've ticked one of the boxes already.

“Seeing Fernando attempt it and things like that, it always makes it more inviting. You never know.”
