Lewis Hamilton backed to deal Mercedes repeat hammer blow

Lewis Hamilton starts the Austrian Grand Prix from third, but has been backed for victory at the Red Bull Ring.

Lewis Hamilton will take victory for a second successive race at the Austrian Grand Prix, F1 fans have predicted, after his first win for Ferrari at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

The seven-time F1 drivers' champion starts from third at the Red Bull Ring, behind George Russell and team-mate Charles Leclerc, with Kimi Antonelli alongside him on the second row of the grid.

However, the 41-year-old has been backed to triumph in Spielberg by more respondents than the other three drivers combined in a post-qualifying poll conducted by RacingNews365.

Due to the extreme heat this weekend in Styria, the 71-lap race is expected to be a two-stop affair, with the potential for a three-stopper, which was the winning strategy for Hamilton in Spain.

The Ferrari driver took a comfortable plurality of 44 per cent, which is fitting given he races under that number.

If the 106-time grand prix winner can add another to his record tally, it would be another devastating blow for Mercedes, with the Briton firmly in the fight for the F1 drivers' championship, between the Brackley-based team's pair.

It would also extend his impressive run of form, following back-to-back second-place finishes before his maiden victory for the Scuderia.
