Lewis Hamilton snaps 56-year F1 record with historic Barcelona win

Lewis Hamilton is the oldest driver to win in F1 since 1970 - and there are just six winners older than him.

Lewis Hamilton has become the oldest driver to win a grand prix in 56 years following his breakthrough win for Ferrari in Barcelona-Catalunya.

Aged 41 years, 5 months, and 7 days on race day, Hamilton finally became a race winner for Ferrari, 686 days after his last win, for Mercedes at the 2024 Belgian GP.

His 106th career win was the first time a driver in their 40s has won since Nigel Mansell at the 1994 Australian GP, and Hamilton is the oldest to win a grand prix since Jack Brabham claimed his 14th and final victory at the 1970 South African GP, aged 43 years, 11 months, and 5 days.

It places Hamilton seventh on the 'oldest' list, but he is also eighth on the 'youngest' drivers to win a grand prix list, his 2007 Canadian GP triumph coming at 22 years, 5 months, and 3 days, almost exactly 19 years before his Barcelona win.

If Hamilton wanted to break the all-time record for the oldest driver to win a grand prix, he would have to compete in any race after January 30th, 2038, to break Luigi Fagioli's 53 years, 0 months, and 22 days from the 1951 French GP.

Hamilton's win made him the 41st different driver to win a world championship grand prix for Ferrari, who recorded their 249th victory, with the win also being the 250th for a Ferrari engine, the exception being Sebastian Vettel for the Ferrari-powered Toro Rosso at the 2008 Italian GP.

The all-British podium of Hamilton, George Russell, and Lando Norris was the first time since the 1968 United States GP that three Brits have shared the podium, with Jackie Stewart, Graham Hill, and John Surtees sweeping the places.

It is the first time since the 1983 San Marino GP that one nationality have swept the podium, when Patrick Tambay, Alain Prost, and Rene Arnoux did so for France.
