Liam Lawson's second practice session came to a premature end on Friday after he ground to a halt when exiting the pit lane.
Lawson was heading back out on track after his initial run in the opening minutes of the session when he was struck with an issue.
The Racing Bulls car came to a stop on the run to the opening corner, still within the pit lane exit lines.
“It's off, I have nothing,” Lawson stated over team radio. “The dash is just 'engine stop'.
“I have no gears, it's just going to... Oh, the gearbox broke. Dude, oh my god.”
Lawson had just four laps under his belt in the session before the issue struck his car, with a virtual safety car deployed to recover the car.
It marks a disappointing end to the opening day of the weekend for Lawson, who claimed sixth place last weekend in Monaco.
