Pascal Wehrlein opens up on first 'match point' as Formula E title fight nears climax

Pascal Wehrlein has stressed that this weekend's Formula E Tokyo E-Prix double-header does not feel like "match point" yet, despite having a mathematical chance of clinching the title in the Japanese capital.

It is highly unlikely, and borderline impossible, for Wehrlein to become a two-time world champion in Tokyo, but mathematically the possibility is there.

To become world champion, Wehrlein must hold a 59-point advantage by the end of the event. His current lead stands at nine points over Jaguar's Mitch Evans. Nevertheless, it is a possibility, but not one Wehrlein is expecting.

Addressing the fact he could win the title in Tokyo, Wehrlein told RacingNews365 during an interview: "I don't feel like it's match point yet, but yeah, mathematically it's possible.

"Mathematically, I also think 15 drivers can still win this championship. We need to be realistic."

For Wehrlein and Porsche, the target is simply to focus on themselves and let things naturally unfold, despite the significance of what is on the table.

With just four races remaining across Tokyo and the London finale, it is very easy for the title contenders to become engrossed in the numbers, something Wehrlein is against.

"We're focusing on ourselves and on being as far at the front as we can," added Wehrlein. "We take it session by session. I'm not a big fan of doing all these mathematical calculations. 

"It just takes focus away. We try our best. We give our best. When I'm in the car, I'm fighting as hard as I can, and yeah, at the end of the day, we'll see where we end up."

'I'm not backing off'

With Wehrlein now leading the championship, it is easy to assume that Evans, Oliver Rowland, António Félix da Costa and Jake Dennis will all be targeting him.

However, the German does not see it that way and does not feel like he is the one being hunted. Instead, he believes they are all "chasing the championship".

Asked if he feels like the driver being hunted, Wehrlein responded: "I don't see it that way, that everyone is hunting me. Everyone is chasing the championship. 

"Two races ago I was fourth in the standings, and I just had one good weekend where I scored a lot of points, and now I'm in the lead. Things can change so quickly, so there's no particular feeling, either good or bad. I just give my best. 

"I also feel like I'm in the hunting position because I want to chase the championship and win that trophy. So yeah, I'm not backing off or getting comfortable with the position I'm in because it's not a comfortable position. 

"It's so, so close right now, and I would say, realistically, there are still five drivers in that fight. Yeah, it could be any one of us."
