Red Bull warned 2026 failure could trigger bombshell Max Verstappen exit

Former F1 driver Johnny Herbert has warned Red Bull that not being the quickest team in the upcoming 2026 season could trigger Max Verstappen’s departure. The past two seasons have seen Verstappen linked with an exit from Red Bull, with talks held with Mercedes during the first half of 2025. Ultimately, he expressed his loyalty to the Austrian outfit for this year, as F1 enters a new power unit regulation cycle. For Red Bull, this also marks the start of life as its own powertrain supplier, representing the biggest challenge in the history of the Milton Keynes-based team. While its engine looked promising during the Barcelona shakedown test, it remains to be seen how competitive it will be. Red Bull boss Laurent Mekies has already acknowledged that Verstappen is taking a risk by sticking with the team, given the scale of the task it faces. As highlighted by Herbert, the four-time world champion is not in F1 to “finish second”; the Dutchman wants to be on top and secure more world titles. For that to happen, he needs one of the best — if not the best — cars on the grid, putting pressure on Red Bull to deliver and retain the 28-year-old beyond 2026. Discussing what Red Bull must do this year to keep Verstappen, Herbert told RacingNews365 at Formula E's Miami E-Prix: "Go faster than all the others, very clearly, because he knows how the team works.  "But fundamentally, it’s all going to come down to the car you start the season with — whether it’s the quickest out of the box, one of the quickest, or very, very close. It might even alternate from track to track. "That’s where, as a racing driver, you’re always thinking: what’s going to benefit me over the next couple of years to win my next world championship? The only way they’re going to achieve that is by giving him a car he can challenge with. But challenging is one thing — you’ve got to beat the likes of, say, Mercedes, for example. "If they don’t, then he’s going to look elsewhere, because that’s what racing drivers do. He’s not there to finish second. His core mentality is to win, and when he doesn’t win, he gets very annoyed.  "But Lewis [Hamilton] is the same. Charles [Leclerc] is the same. George [Russell] is the same. All the drivers here in Formula E are exactly the same. They’re competitive animals, like all sportspeople are. Ultimately, it comes down to what they supply."

Christian Horner speaks for first time after dramatic Red Bull exit: 'I have unfinished business'

Christian Horner has spoken to media for the first time since being ousted as Red Bull team principal, declaring that he has "unfinished business in Formula 1". Horner had been Red Bull boss from its very first season back in 2005 but was axed after last season's British Grand Prix in July.  It marked the end of a major era in the Milton Keynes-based outfit's history and represented a shock exit from the F1 paddock for Horner.  Since his exit from Red Bull, the Briton has been heavily linked with a move to Alpine, with a consortium led by Horner having discussed purchasing Otro Capital's 24% stake. He feels there is more for him still in the pinnacle of motorsport but insists he would only return for the right project. "I feel like I have unfinished business in Formula One," Horner said at the European Motor Show in Dublin, as quoted by The Guardian . "It didn’t finish the way that I would have liked it to finish. “But I am not going to come back for just anything. I am only going to come back for something that can win. I don’t want to go back in the paddock unless I have something to do. I miss the sport, I miss the people, I miss the team that I built.  "I had 21 incredible years in Formula One. I had a great run, won a lot of races, championships and worked with some amazing drivers, engineers and partners. “I don’t need to go back. I could stop my career now. So I would only go back for the right opportunity to work with great people, and to work in an environment where people want to win, and they shared that desire.  "I would want to be a partner, rather than just a hired hand, but we will see how it plays out. I am not in a rush. I don’t need to do anything." Horner 'flattered' Despite being asked over six months ago, Horner speaking at the European Motor Show marked his first interview, much to his surprise.  The 52-year-old has found himself hungry to return to F1 and has found it "flattering" being rumoured with so many positions. "What has been fascinating is that I stepped out of Red Bull on July 8, and this is the first time I have actually spoken to anyone. [In the media] I have been going to every single Formula One team, which has ranged from the back of the grid, to the middle of the grid, and to the front of the grid. And there just seems to be an appetite as to: ‘What am I going to do? Where am I going to go?’ "The reality is that until the spring I can’t do anything anyway. It is very flattering to keep being associated with all of these different teams."

Red Bull eager to build on vital 'first moment' after crash setback

Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies has hailed the spirit inside the team as it commences a new era. The Milton Keynes-based squad's Barcelona shakedown event took a knock on Tuesday when Isack Hadjar collided with the barrier late in the day. Up to that point, Red Bull had been enjoying a positive test with no major issues seemingly appearing with its new power unit. Red Bull has built its own engine for the first time this year, leaving Mekies proud of the work that has gone into making the situation possible. “In terms of what we were expecting from the power unit on these first couple of days, I can only repeat how proud we are of everybody back at base to have managed to give us something that we could actually run with,” he said. “Of course, it's very early days and nothing is perfect but we could start to learn and work as one team. “That was a huge satisfaction. It doesn't change the size of the journey in front of us, but certainly it's the first moment that everybody in Milton Keynes should be proud of.” Red Bull has not yet confirmed when it will return to the track, but has to choose between today [Thu] and Friday as it has just one day of running remaining this week. Despite the setback of the crash, Mekies asserted the team is operating with a positive attitude as it prepares for the new season. “So early days, but great energy in the team,” he said. “Great spirits between Max, Isack and the whole team. “We just can't wait to have the next possibility to run. It's something we are trying to analyse now and hopefully we get some answers a bit later on.”
